November 2009 - Envision Young Peoples Event London

This event to encourage young people into volunteering was held at the Museum of London. We had a stall at the event to inform young people at the event about what we do and how they can get involved in projects in their own area, or even set one up. Even though Experience in Mind is based in Sussex we hope that our work can be replicated elsewhere in the country to increase awareness of young peoples mental health issues. We talked to lots of young people on the day and many participated in our mental health quiz. It was made very clear to us that young people do want to talk about mental health and while awareness is increasing there is still a lot of work to be done.

November 2009 - TAMHS and Healthy Schools Conference

Experience in Mind succesfully launched their schools pack at this event in Brighton which was attended by teachers from the city and other nearby areas. We delivered a presentation about the training pack we have produced and the animations were shown for the first time. There are five animations which volunteers on the project have spent the past year developing. The themes for the schools pack and the animations, which are based on young peoples experiences are: what is mental health?, depression, eating disorders, self harm and anxiety. We also held an exhibition stand at the event to showcase some new photography the group has recently created which reflects various forms of self harming. It was also the first time we used our installation.

October 2008 – World Mental Health Day.

For more info on Mind Mile see www.mindmile.org.uk - On Friday 10th October , Experience in Mind joined together with Mind in Brighton and Hove’s ‘Get Moving’ campaign to celebrate World Mental Health Day. It was a beautiful sunny day and over 100 people of all ages joined together to walk the newly named ‘Mind Mile’ around Preston Park, to encourage and emphasise the importance of exercise for people with mental health issues.

Experience in Mind also showcased our new exhibition of photographs in the Chalet Cafe as the start / finish point of the walk. The photos had a really good reception, with people responding really positively, remarking on their professional quality and techniques, vibrant colours and clear messages about young people’s mental health.

November 2008 - Jubilee Library Photography Exhibition.

Experience in Mind ran an exhibition which ran from 3rd-21st November 2008. The exhibition was a massive success for the project giving the public their first opportunity to view the project’s amazing photography work. The photos did everything they were supposed to and more, getting stigma challenging messages across in a way that really spoke to members of the community, often on a personal level. The exhibition received great reviews:

- “visually astounding...curious to learn more”

- “they could be adorned in any art gallery”

- “brilliant to see young people being so open and expressive about their experiences”

- “capture essence of mental health problems”

- “powerful photos, very emotive”

March 2009 – Film screening at Duke of York’s Cinema Brighton

Experience in Mind project have written and produced three innovative and enlightening short films which explore young people’s experiences of mental health. A showcase of these films, ‘Through the Mind’s Eyes’, was shown as a free community event on Thursday 26th March 2009 at the Duke of York’s Cinema, Preston Circus, Brighton. This special screening was attended by Sue Berlowitz, Deputy Children's Commissioner for England & CEO of 11 Million.

The films, titled ‘Through the Mind’s Eyes’, portray a unique journey through depression, self harm and psychosis, from a young person perspective. It is hoped this free event will continue the necessary work in challenging stereotypes and opening up dialogue about experiences that are so often hidden.

May 2009 – Open House for Youth Arts Fringe

We held an ‘Open House’ event on Saturdays throughout the month of May at YAC on Blatchington Road. Public feedback was really positive -
